Event description

Description

Needs Based, Compassionate Communication

Based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg’s “Nonviolent Communication”, this 3 hour workshop is an experiential introduction to his concepts and the tools of NVC: providing a snapshot of how workshop participants might adopt and explore new ways of communicating in a way that can lead to positive outcomes for all involved.

Needs Based, Compassionate communication as a concept Is based on an idea that all human beings have the capacity for compassion, and only resort to defensive or angry behavior that harms themselves and others when they do not have effective strategies for meeting needs (theirs and others). Habits of thinking and speaking that lead to the use of violence (social, psychological and physical) are learned through culture.

This model of communication holds that most conflicts between individuals or within groups arise from miscommunication about their own needs, due to coercive or manipulative language that induces fear, guilt, shame etc. These “violent” modes of communication, when used during conflict, divert the attention of the participants away from clarifying their needs, feelings perceptions and requests. This of course can, and usually does, escalate the conflict.

Anticipated Workshop Outcomes

Workshop participants will be able to:

* Identify and discriminate between thoughts, feelings and needs

* Identify and express our own needs

* Value Diversity
