Event description

Have you dreamed of having your very own extra virgin olive oil from your backyard olive tree? Or would you just love to see how olive oil is made and taste it fresh off the press?

Freshfield Grove are teaming up with Our Coal Valley and Eat Well Tasmania to offer this community olive pressing day on Sunday 30th June so you can do just that. Whether you’ve got 1kg or 150kg, bring all your olives along and help us make a totally unique Tasmanian Community Blend Olive Oil. You'll receive 100ml of this special oil to take home on the day. The rest of your share of the oil will be filtered, packed, and labelled, and will be ready for you to collect by the end of July.

While you’re here that day you can take a walk through the grove, get a tour of the olive press, taste fresh new season local olive oil, hang out in the Back Paddock wine caravan with a glass of local wine, enjoy a bite to eat from Wattlebanks Catering, warm up with coffee or hot chocolate from Little Bean Coffee or just chill out on a haybale.

The ticket price of $10 is per group or family. If you're bringing olives then your ticket includes pressing of up to 3kg of olives. If you're not bringing olives your ticket includes 100ml of Freshfield Grove 2019 extra virgin olive oil.

What you need to do:

  • Register now to book your spot

  • Bring your olives to us on the day

  • We’ll do the rest so you can enjoy your very own cold pressed extra virgin olive oil!

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

You can contact Freshfield Grove by email (farmerfi@freshfieldgrove.com.au) or phone (0400127447) if your questions aren't answered below.

Do I have to register?

Yes please – the quantity of olives we can press in a day is limited, and so is the number of people we can manage on the farm, so we recommend booking in advance to make sure your place is reserved.

How much will it cost?

Our charge is $3 per kilo of olives. The minimum charge of $10 is included in your ticket price. This includes pressing, filtering, packing, and labelling.

How many olives do I need to bring in order to take part?

You can bring between 1 and 150kg of olives. Your olives will be weighed and you’ll receive a corresponding share of the oil produced. (Please note: the oil you receive will be a share of the community blend of all the oil produced on the day.)

What if I have more than 150kg?

Freshfield Grove can press this for you as a single estate press. Please email farmerfi@freshfieldgrove.com.au for more information.

When should I pick my olives?

It’s best if they’re picked as close to pressing time as possible. Picking the day before and keeping them somewhere cool in a ventilated container is ideal. If you don’t have a ventilated crate then a washing basket lined with a sheet, storage crates, or smaller buckets will be fine.

If you're worried that you're losing olives to hungry birds or frost they can be picked up to 2 weeks in advance if you can store them at 5degC or below (fridge temperature)

Do I need to take out all the leaves and any other stuff?

It’s very important that there are no stones or pieces of metal mixed in with the olives as this will break the press Regarding leaves, it helps us if there aren’t many leaves left in, but there is a leaf blower as part of the press so don’t worry too much about this.

Do I need to wash the olives?

No, the olive press has a washing unit.

Does it matter what colour my olives are?

No. Green, turning colour, and black olives are all fine.

How much oil will I get?

This is the million dollar question! The proportion of oil in an olive increases as it ripens (and becomes black). The yield from a mixed press like this with lots of different varieties at different stages of ripeness is very hard to predict, and could be anywhere from 5% to 15%! So, for every kilogram of olives we press, you can expect to get between 50ml and 150ml. (But you will receive at least 100ml).

Can I take my oil home on the day?

You’ll be given a 100ml bottle of freshly pressed unfiltered oil to take home on the day. This unfiltered oil has a relatively short shelf life due to the sediment and we recommend using it within 3 months.

The rest of the oil will be filtered, packed, and labelled for you, and this will be available by the end of July. You can arrange to collect your oil from Freshfield Grove at one of three locations: (1) at the farm, (2) at the Royal Hobart Hospital, (3) at Farm Gate Market.

Can I bring my dog?

Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome.

Do you have EFTPOS?

Yes we do.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

On-site parking is available.

What's the refund policy?

Refunds are available up to 7 days from the event.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, an electronic ticket is fine.

Can I update my registration information?

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Is it ok if the number of people in my party changes?

Yes, but we'd be grateful if you could let us know.
