Description

Professor Ken Hillman is an author and has worked in intensive care since its inception. But he is appalled by the way the ICU has become a place where the frail, soon-to-die and dying are given unnecessary operations and life-prolonging treatments without their wishes being taken into account

As a doctor and professor of intensive care Ken Hillman has borne witness to the way our hospitals manage death and how much this has changed over a matter of generations. But in our quest to extend life, have we forgotten how to die well? He explores this and other questions in a new book 'A Good Life to the End'

Dr Sarah Winch is an author and head of the Medical Ethics, Law and Professionalism discipline at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Queensland. She is also the CEO of Health Ethics Australia, a charity that aims to improve death literacy for everyone and compassion awareness for clinicians. She teaches healthcare ethics and researches end-of-life care. Sarah's professional health ethics advice is sought nationally and internationally by clinicians and government agencies. A widely published author, she draws on her expertise and experiences in end-of-life healthcare to help others get the best death possible.

Sarah is the author of 'The Best Death'. In April 2008 Sarah Winch’s husband, Lincoln, died from kidney cancer that was diagnosed only four months earlier. He was 48. Sarah and Lincoln prepared as best they could for his death. Her 30 years as a registered nurse and ethicist, specifically focused on end-of-life care, did not fully prepare Sarah for Lincoln’s death, but it did help them plan for the best death possible.

This is a free community forum, which includes free morning tea and the opportunity to chat directly with the authors

Professor Hillman and Dr Winch’s books will include a book reading and be conducting a book signing session during morning tea.
