Event description

Description

Co-operatives have been around for a long time; traditionally in farming, wholesale and retail. There is a growing renewed interest in the co-op model, including in housing. In this workshop we will provide a brief history of co-ops and discuss their characteristics, such as values, principles, decision making, ownership and responsibility. We will step through some of the basic how-to's in forming and running a co-op, and share a number of international and Australian examples.

Our aim is that at the end of the evening you will understand better the difference that housing co-operatives can make to the way we live, what is involved in setting one up, and be familiar with some international and Australian case studies.

Your facilitators - Eugenie Stockmann from Green Fabric, will present this session together with guest presenter Elizabeth Cheong.

Elizabeth Cheong has been a strong advocate for the co-operative model over the last 15 years after completing a PhD exploring the co-operative as a business model for the Australian agricultural industry. She brings a broader perspective to community led co-op housing monitoring international research and the experiences of other organisations as they develop and live in this form of housing. Drawing on her vocational education and training background, Elizabeth is presently writing a series of co-op training modules to support the fifth co-operative principle.

Eugenie Stockmann is founder of Green Fabric, a hub for facilitating and promoting opportunities for sustainable community living. She is know for the ground breaking work as co-founder of The Green Swing who to date have completed two multi-award winning sustainable infill projects in Lathlain, Town of Victoria Park. She is also a partner in Green Gurus, a sustainability education & consultancy firm for the property sector. Eugenie has a diverse background in finance, project & office management & a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainability from Murdoch University, focusing on Sustainable Urban & Regional Planning.

Future events - This event is part of our Sustainable Community Building & Living Series where we will learn about & from the people that made projects a reality &/or call them home. We will hear from professionals that assist groups along the way, they will share their wisdon, & inspire us to realise our own dreams. Future dates to put in your diary are: 6 August and 22 October.

All events will be held at The Meeting Place in Fremantle, starting at 7pm, till 9pm.
