Description

What: This is a 3-hour workshop (24 September OR 25 September) to raise awareness of the rights of people who are Deafblind.

Who: This workshop is for support workers, service providers, allied health practitioners and anyone who is interested in supporting people who are Deafblind to be active citizens in our community.

Costs: Free but you must register

The workshop will explore:

  • What is Deafblindness?

  • Getting the right supports - the many different approaches to supporting people who are Deafblind

  • How we understand and support communication, using a human rights approach

  • Interpreters, communication guides and assistive technology

  • What training is available and what’s involved

  • How we can all get on the same page

Auslan Interpreters will be present.

Time: 5.00pm to 8.00pm - Tuesday 24 September OR 10.00am to 1.00pm - Wednesday 25 September 2019

Location: Hunter Union’s Building / 406 – 408 King Street, Newcastle West

The presenters: Steve Ripley is a leader in supporting the human rights, communication and inclusion of people who are Deafblind in this country. As a Deafblind man himself, Steve brings lived experience to his work which has included over 10 years of Deafblind communication training for services, including those supporting Deafblind people who live in group homes.

Justine Lorenz is a Deafblind practitioner based in the Hunter who also volunteers to support the local Deafblind peer group. Justine works towards a vision where each person gets the supports they need to live the life they choose.
