Exclusively for our valued Alumni and friends, this Masterclass is an exciting opportunity to take part in a select Law Masters elective for professional development.

CLASS DATES: 10, 17, 24, 31 August 2017, 9.00am - 4.30pm

Dual Delivery Mode

This is a dual delivery mode program, meaning attendees from the Alumni & Friends Program and Law Masters students share the classroom experience. Alumni & Friends attendees are not enrolled as students and do not complete unit assessment for credit.

Overview

Commercial alternative dispute resolution methods and the process of mediation. The uses, benefits and limitations of various ADR processes are critically examined. The impact of ADR on the legal system and the development of law are considered. Including participation in simulation exercises, the Unit offers knowledge to assist legal representatives and other students to maximise the value of a range of ADR processes.

Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will have:

  • an acquaintance with and critical appreciation of the range of alternatives to commercial litigation

  • an understanding of the process and principles of mediation

  • a practical understanding of the uses of a range of commercial ADR processes

  • participed in two simulated mediation exercises

Presenter: Anne Sutherland-Kelly

Anne Sutherland Kelly

Anne is a practising mediator, regarded as a leading practitioner and teacher in the field of ADR. The establishment of her mediation practice followed a legal background in one of Australia's top tier commercial law firms, and then in human rights law reform.

Anne is a mediator appointed to the Victorian Civil & Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). She has held various panel appointments as mediator, conciliator and arbitrator, including the Administrative Decisions Tribunal of NSW; the Workers Compensation Commission of NSW; and the Health Conciliation Registry of NSW. Anne delivers mediation training throughout Australia and internationally. Anne is an assessor for accreditation under the Australian National Mediator Standards (NMAS).

Anne is also a director of Next Level Learning Pty Ltd, which offers consultancy services to private & public sector clients in the areas of conflict management, communication, leadership and culture change.
