Event Details

Who is it for?

  • Anyone and everyone! Dragon Boat Paddling is a great low-impact sport suitable for all ages, backgrounds and abilities. We cater for weekend warriors to elite athletes.

Pre-requisites

  • Sorry, no first-time beginners at these club training sessions - this is to provide you with best experience and for own enjoyment.
  • This event is ideal for those with experience in Dragon Boat Paddling.
  • We will resume our 'Introduction to Dragon Boat Racing course for those new to Dragon Boat Racing in June 2020. 

Please register for every session separately - we need to manage attendance and participants numbers.

What will I learn?

Over a 1-hour long session you will be introduced to:

  • Safe and efficient ways to warm up
  • Your teammates and the importance of teamwork in this sport
  • The fundamentals of the Dragon Boat stroke
  • Basics of Dragon Boat Racing
  • Regular on-water training
  • Debrief and opportunity for feedback and Q&A with the coaching team, captains and club officials
  • Coffee time after training on Saturday :-)  

What should I bring?

  • Sport clothes in summer, sleeves and thermals in winter
  • Sport cap or beanie, depending on the weather 
  • Water shoes or flip flops/thongs (you will get wet!)
  • Sun screen
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Towel, change of dry clothes

What do I wear?

  • You will be getting wet, so make sure you are dressed in clothing that is appropriate for the conditions e.g. Lycra, neoprene or polypropylene tops and bottoms; a windproof top  (on rainy days in winter); water shoes, thongs, sandals or old runners; beanie, cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen, depending on the weather. Please, NO COTTON, JEANS, HOODIES or JUMPERS.
  • All equipment, lifejackets and paddles are supplied. You will be getting wet, so make sure you wear appropriate clothing that wicks away moisture and keeps you warm if it's a cold day. There are showers and change facilities in the Boat Hub. You can leave your bags with us on the shelves in the hub or access the lockers in the showers with a 2$ coin deposit.

What the Heck is Dragon Boating and who are the YRDs?

  • We foster a culture of supportive and inclusive development which is accessible to a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • We cater to everyone regardless of age, sexuality or gender and we are committed to make for positive and diverse communities where everyone feels at ease and able to perform to the best of their abilities.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

  • You must be an adult (+16) to participate in the event on your own.  There is no ID requirement. If you are younger than 16, please bring your guardian/parent with you or have them sign a waiver for your participation before attending (contact the organiser for details).

How do I get there?

  • Walk or by Train:
    The Community boat hub is next to the Library at the Dock. Use the metro trains to get to Southern Cross station and walk to the boat hub at 912 Collins St.
  • By Tram:

    ake the 11 or 48 tram line get to the final station at Victoria Harbor, library at the Docks
  • By Car:
    YRD Club Google maps.  Parking is available at 55 and 57 merchant St. next to Woollies for about 12$ flat full day rate on Saturdays. See details here: https://www.carepark.com.au/find-a-care-park/exo-docklands-55-merchant-street/
  • By Bike
    If you ride, you can also get to the boat hub using the same route as the cars do. Bike racks are available for you to secure your bike during the session. Ask any club member for assistance with the bike cage code.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

  • No

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

  • No. We require you to read the event conditions and sign a waiver for swimming and sport abilities. It is a free event and your friends can come and register on the spot or before the event separately. 

 What’s next

  • Once you've successfully completed 3 come and try events, you will be eligible to join our Dragon Boating club - the Yarra River Dragons (YRDs) and join us for regular training sessions and consistently build on your skills, fitness and knowledge - the best way to improve is by training regularly!

  • After applying you will receive more information around fees and the payment process.
