Event description

Description

Whether you're a globally minded individual, a business with a social conscience, a charity with limited resources or a government with competing priorities, impact accountability and effective giving must be top of mind.

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has stated: "One thing is very clear – the global context for financing development has changed and our aid program must change with it." This applies to investments of all kinds that hope to affect positive change in the world, and an obligation rests with those in a position to help to ensure they're maximising their impact for good.

Led by Global Citizen, please join us for an important conversation and Q&A around the topic of effective altruism. Refreshments gratefully provided by Inspire9, the original community-led coworking space for Melbourne’s startups, freelancers and creatives.

Hosted by

Sarah Meredith, Australian Country Director, Global Citizen

Global Citizen is a social movement of 8 million people worldwide, striving towards ending extreme poverty by 2030. Over 11 million actions taken by global citizens on our platform have resulted in $30 billion of commitments, set to affect the lives of 1 billion people living in poverty around the world.

Speakers

Dr Bridget Williams, Acting Manager, Effective Altruism Australia

Effective Altruism Australia exists to help your resources go further in helping others. Finding effective charities can be the difference between transforming lives and accomplishing nothing. We use research from multiple leading charity evaluators to rigorously assess the impact that a donation can have. All of our partner charities have been thoroughly and independently investigated, and are supported by swathes of supporting academic literature.

Sarah Wickham, Donor Relations Manager, Equity Trustees

Since 1888, Equity Trustess has helped Australians leave a lasting legacy through charitable trusts and foundations. As one of the largest distributors of philanthropic funds in Australia, they manage more than 500 charitable trusts and foundations. In 2016, Equity Trustees distributed more than $70 million to various charities and charitable causes.

Charlie Syme, Marketing and Community Manager, B Lab (B Corporations Australia Certifier)

B Corporations represent an emerging group of companies that are using the power of business to create a positive impact on the world and generate a shared and durable prosperity for all. Certified B Corporations have undertaken the B Impact Assessment, scored over 80, and have signed a term sheet that declares that they will consider all stakeholders. It is a rigorous assessment that explores a company’s governance, transparency, environmental and social impact. B Corps voluntarily hold themselves to a higher level of accountability in these areas. Together, B Corps redefine success in business by competing not to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world.
