Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale to

perform with Mt Druitt Indigenous Choir

Special Western Sydney concert leading up to NAIDOC 2017

As a prelude to NAIDOC (first week of July 2017), a special performance has been arranged combining the talents of the visiting US choir, the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale with our Mt Druitt Indigenous Choir.

Now in its 40th season, the choir has won three first place Gold Medals in international competitions and has toured in Europe and Asia.

The event will take place in at the Plumpton Performing Arts Centre, Hyatt Street, Plumpton on Monday, June 26 at 6pm. Entry cost is $10 for Families and $5 Single.

The Executive Director of the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, Ms Marcia Hendrick’s, said the choir knows that interacting with, learning from and singing alongside the Mt Druitt Indigenous Choir is going to be the highlight of their visit to Australia. They are grateful for the chance to share cultures and talent and thank the Mt. Druitt Indigenous Choir for the opportunity.

The singers in the US choir comprise 10 boys ages 13-18 and 34 girls ages 12-18 (grades 6-12 in the United States of America). They live high up in the Rocky Mountains (about 7000 feet above sea level) approximately an hour south of Denver.

The US choir’s Australian repertoire will include: Bohemian Rhapsody, Festival Sanctus, Dream a Dream, Stand Together, You can’t stop the Beat, Seasons of Love, Everybody Rejoice, Dancing Queen, Hallelujah from the movie Shrek, Waltzing Matilda and the Australian and US national anthems, among other well-known songs.

Formed in 2010, the Mt Druitt Indigenous Choir is one of the most successful achievements of Nulawala Inc, which is the organisation behind the One Good Day outreach initiative which is about taking positive action to assist disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

“The choir has performed by invitation at hundreds of venues across Sydney as well as touring to Cape York, Central Queensland and Victoria,” said Dave Armstrong, General Manager of Nulawala Inc, coordinator of the choir. “In 2016, we made 47 appearances across both city and country, which is outstanding for any choir and a number of those were repeated by popular demand.”

“We’re especially proud to be standing on stage alongside such a talented group as the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale which is now in its 40th season of sharing music and friendship, not only with their local community but across the world – and now with Australians.”
