Event description

Description

Join us for a workshop with Mike where we'll roll up our sleeves, pull out our pitchforks and consider the potential and appropriateness of urban farming in the Australian context. Mike's experience establishing both urban and regional farms in Australia and overseas will provide a basis from which to engage in a robust Exchange whilst getting a little grubby...!

With rapid population growth and unprecedented levels of urbanisation, the need for sustainable food systems has become increasingly important. Urban farming has begun to gain momentum, with innovative pilot projects popping up in cities around the world. But can it produce enough food to be economically and environmentally sustainable?

With a background in education, Mike worked as agricultural director at Hava ve Adam in Israel where he refined his farming practices. From there Mike undertook several apprenticeships in organic farming in the US and expanded his knowledge in the field, most notably the rooftop farm of Brooklyn Grange, an urban farming and green roof consulting agency that operates the largest soil-based rooftop farms in the US. Since then, Mike has returned home to Australia with a focus on the development of small scale, intensive organic farming at Mossy Willow Farm.
