As the last car rolls off Holden's production line, some fear corporate-scale manufacturing in Australia is lost for good.

It seems however, that our ingenious spirit is intent on enduring. Interested in quality, innovation, design, sustainability and impact, recent years have seen an emergence in successful local manufacturing at a boutique scale.

Join us for an Exchange intended to unpack the complexity and opportunity for those seeking to design + make + sell locally and further afield.

Justin Hutchinson is an industrial designer, lecturer and urban innovator. As Design Director of Urban Commons, a cross-disciplinary design consultancy committed to reviving the spirit of the commons in our urban spaces, he strives for considered urban solutions to high density living through technological and social innovation utilising both computer generated fabrication as well as hand craftsmanship.

Furniture designer and maker Travis Dean co-founded Cantilever Interiors just over a decade ago. Cantilever design and build kitchen systems with an emphasis on quality design and sustainable living. Driven by longevity, functionality and durability, their systems based approach ensures a high-performance product at a competitive price point.

Joel Griffs co-founded Binq, a local window manufacturer that matches European technology with local innovation and materials to deliver high performance, highly sustainable window solutions. More recently, Joel established Heidi Build, a carpentry business with an emphasis on quality and sustainability.
