TOPIC: Finding your Media Voice - a panel discussion

** Collaborative event in conjunction with Australian Institute of ManagementWomen on Boards and Women Chiefs of Enterprise **

“Finding your media voice (and improving women leaders’ share) ” is a session for those who may not only want to get more involved with media, but also be heard in essential forums and communicate with more influence.

Research suggests that only 11% of our media content is from women business leaders so clearly there’s more work to be done in building profile. Yet women often feel more responsibility in using social media, and are sometimes slow to get on board with the tools. There are more opportunities than ever before via blogging, books, social media tools and article writing, but how can we do it in the most effective way possible? How do you find an authentic voice in the first place? Is it still about show(woman)ship? And how do you get to be considered newsworthy as a future go-to source?

Our panel forum features three experts with current insights and practical advice. This includes a media perspective from Joanne Gray, the new editor of BOSS magazine. Joanne is a leading financial and business journalist, working locally on prestige media outlets, including the role of past editor at EuroMoney, and she was a former Washington Correspondent for the Australian Financial Review.

International marketer and consultant Kim McKay OA will give her take on how women in often male-oriented areas, such as science, can be heard. Kim speaks from authority, having not only co-founded and worked for the Clean Up Australia and Clean Up the World movements over two decades, but also having promoted adventure pursuits, such as the BOC Ocean racing event. Kim co-authored the best-selling True Green book series published by ABC books. She currently advises blue chip companies and major events, such as the Shackleton Epic through her Sydney-based social and sustainability marketing company momentum2.

On the social media side, Dee Madigan, digital expert and advertising creative director , knows how to deliver and devise online campaigns and communications, and has a large personal following on Twitter. Dee is a well known panellist on ABC Gruen Transfer, and is interviewed regularly on ABC radio, The Perrett Report, and SKY Business.

Moderator and PR veteran of over 20 years Julianne Dowling has worked both sides of the fence as a journalist and writer/blogger and is involved with her second communications consulting business – Asset Public Relations – having co-sold the first company in Melbourne and Sydney to a top US group. Launching BPAY in Australia, Julianne continues to specialise in financial services clients, such as insurers and banks, wealth management groups, and also mentors SMEs and Not for Profit organisations needing to get noticed.
