Event description
KickArts Contemporary Arts Cobbling workshop with Anne Jillett in conjunction with M&G QLD 2019 Conference 'Opening Doors'

About this Event

From her Bellenden Kerr studio Ellis Road Fibre Art, Anne Jillett creates stunning woven forms from natural materials, thigh-spun yarn and recycled fabrics. These coiled baskets, unique vessels and suspended forms are inspired by and built upon driftwood, found by the artist while beach combing south of Cairns.

My name is Anne Jillett.

“I live and work in Far North Queensland Australia. My studio is situated deep in the rainforest overlooking the canopy to the spectacular Wooroonooran National Park.

I have always had a great passion for all things textile and have sewn, embroidered, and knitted from a very early age. I like to use natural, man-made and recycled materials to create three dimensional sculptural vessels that explore form using positive and negative space. I am particularly drawn to the ocean as a source of inspiration for my more recent pieces. A fascination with the action of tides and currents, and their sculptural effects on sand and rocks, lie at the heart of my work. The high tide line holds many treasures that are included in the design process. I am passionate about environmental concerns that effect the oceans of our world. While I am not an activist, I hope that my work prompts consideration of this vast natural resource”.

About the workshop:

In this workshop Anne will share the technique of Cobbling, a weaving method used to bind and structure natural materials to hold shape and form. This technique can be applied to numerous natural fibres, each highlighting their own characteristics while reflecting the hands that created them.

Materials supplied: Sewing needles, selection of thread, natural coconut fibre, raffia, grass and a selection of found objects to be used as features or adornments if desired.

Participants are not required to bring any materials for this workshop however are welcome to bring an item they might like to incorporate into their woven structure eg. A shell or something small (hand held) .
