Event description

Description

What are pollinators?

As flowering plants can’t move around in search of a mate to reproduce, they therefore rely on a range of mechanisms (for example wind, water and animals) to help disperse their pollen to other flowers. This is called pollination. Pollination leads to fertilisaton, and fertilisation helps plants to develop seeds and fruits.

Help celebrate pollinator week

Australia Pollinator Week (12-19 November) is a time to help celebrate Spring and the important role of pollinators. Macquarie University and North Sydney Council are hosting a free Community Pollination Workshop on Saturday 11 November.

At this family friendly workshop you will be introduced to the type of insects and particularly the pollinators that are found at the Coal Loader and the surrounding Balls Head bushland. Participate in sweep netting techniques; learn how to identify the local insects using guides and microscopes and undertake scientific recording methods. This hands on session will also provide you with an overview on the types of plants and habitat features required to recruit insect pollinators along with practical ways you can build artificial habitats such as insect hotels.
