7 May:
Exploring Creativity and Mark Making
Discuss with the class what creativity is and barriers to creativity. Demonstrate types of visual diaries and show examples. In your visual diary, answer the following questions: What does creativity mean to you? How would you know you are being creative? List three creative projects that you have started and want to finish. This could be knitting, refashioning clothes, doing a painting – anything you like.
On a large sheet of watercolour paper make a range of marks using watercolour, pastel, pens, pencils and watercolour pencils. Try out a number of different marks such as circles, lines, or using your non-dominant hand. Once the sheet is filled, use a frame and select three or more squares of work that are particularly pleasing. Cut it out and past into visual diary.

14 May:
Upside Down Drawing
Learning to draw is about seeing exactly what is there – how one line relates to another. Turn a simple line drawing upside down, and cover with a piece of paper. Slowly copy the drawing, an inch at a time, focusing on the length and angles of lines and their relationship to each other.

21 May:
Composition and Collage
Discuss the elements of composition, showing examples from books. Use a frame to select an interesting composition from a magazine. Draw small thumbnail compositional sketches in visual diaries. Make collages on the basis of these compositional sketches using a variety of textured papers. Cut and tear paper.

28 May:
Playing Watercolour
Exploring watercolour using a variety of techniques. Paint concentric and overlapping circles exploring different brushes and techniques such as thin layers – fill in white space with dots, dashes or lines using strong colours.

4 June:
Learn to See by Drawing Blind
Beginners often draw symbolically which means they are not really seeing. Blind contour drawing is one way to avoid drawing symbolically. Without looking at your drawing, very slowly draw the edges of an object. Draw five blind contour drawings of bottles. Vary use of materials – start with hard pencil, then use a soft pencil, pen, oil pastel and pen over the top. Once the drawing is complete add colour using watercolour.

18 June:
Doodle an Artwork
Most of us doodle. A doodle can be the start of an artwork. Work on doodles created during the week. Modify the doodle in at least three distinct steps. Redraw the doodles using different pens and pencils. Make them larger or smaller. Add colour using watercolour, pastel or pen. Create a repetitive design. Put the doodles on coloured paper. Collage the doodle.
