Clean Up Australia Day Community Clean-Up - German Church Rd
Event Information
About this Event
Litter Legends will be hosting its first-ever Community Clean-Up for Clean Up Australia Day on the 7th of March 2021 between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
As some of you may be aware, Litter Legends have almost completely cleaned German Church Rd in Redland City. It's taken over 31 weeks but we're getting very close to finishing. Unfortunately, due to how long it's taken for us to clean this road from one end to the other an extraordinary amount of new litter has already appeared. So, what better way to clean up all this new litter by hosting a Community Clean-Up for Clean Up Australia Day!
Our aim for this Community Clean-Up is to clean the entire stretch of German Church Rd from Valley Way to Gordon Rd. Which adds up to nearly 4 kilometres of roadside that needs to be cleaned in one day. Whether we get it done or not depends on how many volunteers attend to help out.
The Community Clean-Up will begin at 7:00 AM and will end at 1:00 PM. Please note that you don't have to attend for the entire 6 hours. Come and go as you please with whatever time you're willing to volunteer. Whether it be 5 minutes, 2 hours or the entire day it will be appreciated severely. Everyone is welcomed to attend! Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
The meeting location will be on the corner of Valley Way / German Church Rd / Heinemann Rd roundabout intersection. There will be a popup gazebo where you can sign on; collect some clean-up equipment like gloves, bags and high visibility vests; put on sunscreen, insect repellent and sanitize your hands. I suggest you bring along plenty of water, your own gloves (if possible), sunscreen and insect repellent (if possible). Once you have finished volunteering your time I ask you to come back to the gazebo and return any equipment that you have used and sign out.
If you're planning to attend this Community Clean-Up you MUST reserve a space via Eventbrite. Litter Legends needs to know how many people are attending so we can make sure COVID-19 restrictions will not be breached. If you have registered and can no longer attend make sure to either cancel your registration or contact Litter Legends and let us know you will no longer be attending.
Litter Legends will require a few dedicated volunteer helpers on the day. I need someone who will be able to sit at the Gazebo all day (6 hours) and make sure everyone is being signed in and out and receiving the appropriate equipment etc. If you're interested please private message or email Litter Legends. If you aren't available the entire day please contact me still as we may be able to swap multiple people throughout the day. If anyone is able to donate a gazebo for the day please get in contact with.
If you have any further questions or enquiries to do with this Community Clean-Up please get in contact with Litter Legends via any of our social media accounts or email.
FAQ:
How is Litter Legends planning on cleaning 4 kilometres of roadside in 6 hours? There will be markers put up by Litter Legends dividing the road up into 10 sections on each side of the road. Each section will be 400 metres long. Depending on how many people volunteer, Litter Legends will split volunteers between each marker and set a goal to clean to the next marker. If we do complete all 10 markers on each side of the road then for the remainder of the Community Clean-Up, I'll ask volunteers to continue onto other side streets.
What does Litter Legends consider "rubbish"? Litter Legends sees any man-made items as rubbish. Ranging from paper, cigarette butts, plastic, cardboard, timber, concrete/bricks etc, tyres, any material. So anything that isn't natural take it! If you find asbestos please don't touch or move it just notify Layne of its location and it will be dealt with appropriately.
What do I do if I fill my bag or find a large item of rubbish? Please place fulls bags of rubbish or large items close to the side of the road so they are highly visible to a vehicle driving past. Just make sure it's not to close to the road where it becomes a hazard to vehicles. Throughout the day, I will drive along and pick up the full bags of rubbish and larger items.
How will I make my way to my set marker and back to the gazebo once I'm finished? You can either drive to your set marker yourself or I can give you a lift to your set marker. You then can drive back to the gazebo yourself or I can pick you up and drop you back off at the gazebo.
Safety and Responsibility: Litter Legends does take safety very seriously. We try our best to protect our volunteers with essential safety equipment (high visibility vests, gloves etc.). We don't force our volunteers to do anything that they aren't comfortable doing. You are a volunteer and all Litter Legends ask is for you to pick up rubbish. If you obtain a minor injury while volunteering Litter Legends will have a first aid kit on site to treat small injuries. If it is a serious injury or severe accident please immediately dial 000.
I hope to see many of your faces on Clean Up Australia Day!
Thanks all, Layne from Litter Legends.
