Event description

Description

As a Colombian born artist, adopted and raised in Australia, Claudia Nicholson occupies an ambivalent position between Latina/o, Amerindian and Australian cultures. The work she makes is a type of reverse erosion. It is an aggregation of symbols, experiences, cultural practices and art making techniques that highlight the role that volition plays in the construction of queer identity. Her practice usurps historical and colonial accounts of the past and remembers anew to reposition, reclaim and re-construct these histories and complex identities.

The two-part workshop is an extension of a series of works Nicholson created for Club Ate, a queer club night run by Justin Shoulder and Bhenji Ra where people were invited to send Nicholson a photo of themselves that was then turned an animated portrait and displayed in a club context. The videos playfully and simply celebrate diversity and are designed to equip the students with new creative skills and confidence in self-expression.

Presented in partnership with Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, participants create video self -portraits using simple video editing programs and the online platform Blingee.com.

This workshop is open to LGTBQI identifying young people age 13+
