THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI)
Horror | 71 mins (Silent)
Directed by Robert Wiene
In one of the most influential films of the silent era, Werner Krauss plays the title character, Dr. Caligari, a sinister hypnotist who travels the carnival circuit exhibiting a somnambulist named Cesare (Conrad Veidt).
In one tiny German town a series of murders coincide with Caligari's visit. When the best friend of hero Francis (Friedrich Feher) is killed, the deed appears to be the outgrowth of a romantic rivalry over the hand of the lovely Jane (Lil Dagover). Francis suspects Caligari but he is ignored by the police. Investigating on his own, Francis seemingly discovers that Caligari has been ordering the somnambulist to commit the murders, but the story eventually takes a more surprising direction ...
In one of the most exciting and inspired horror movies ever made, Caligari's German Expressionist style ultimately led to the dark shadows and sharp angles of the film noir urban crime dramas of the 1940s. Robert Wiene’s characters inhabit a jagged landscape of sharp angles and tilted walls and windows, staircases climbing through crazy diagonals, trees with spiky leaves, and grass that looks like knives. These radical distortions immediately set this film apart from everything that had come before it, and which were based on the camera's naive and innate tendency to record reality. Justifiably, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI is considered one of the first true horror films, and is still thought to be one of the best.
