The City of Melville Art Awards is in its 41st year. Every year over 250 professional, emerging and student artists exhibit and share in over $14,000 of prizes. No photos are required of your artwork but it is important that entries are delivered on time. Please read all the information on this page before proceeding with your registration as fees are non-refundable. You can edit your details after you have completed registration up to 21 July.


  • $4000 First Prize - Acquisitive.

  • $1500 Painting – includes acrylic/oil/mixed media/watercolour on canvas or board.

  • $1500 Works on Paper – includes printmaking, pastel, pencil, charcoal on paper.

  • $1500 3D/Sculpture/Textiles – Includes framed and unframed textile works, and small scale sculpture.

  • $500 Youth – includes artworks by artists aged 15 to 18 years.

  • $1000 City of Melville Resident Award.

  • $1000 People's Choice Award.

  • $500 Highly Commended Prizes in each category.


  • Entries open: 1 May to 21 July 2017 (Only the first 250 entries will be accepted.)

  • Artwork to be delivered: Saturday 19 August, 9am - 12noon. Deliver to: City of Melville Civic Centre, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon.

  • Unsold artwork to be collected: Sunday 3 September, 2-4pm.

  • Exhibition Opening and Awards: Friday 25 August and 6:30pm

  • Exhibition and Sale: 26 August to 3 September 2017.


  1. Due to limited hanging space, only the first 250 entries received will be accepted and exhibited. Entry forms/fees received after the 250 will be returned and refunded.

  2. Entry forms must be received by 5.00pm Friday, 21 July 2017.

  3. Works must be delivered at the specified times. Failure to do so will result in works not being judged or displayed.

  4. Works are to be collected at the specified times. Should you be unable to collect work on this date, prior arrangements must be made to collect the work. Works not collected by 20 September 2017 will become the property of the City of Melville.

  5. To enter the Youth Category, entrants must turn 15 years in 2017 or be no older than 18 years in 2017. All conditions apply with the exception that works need not be for sale.

  6. Each entrant may submit one work only.

  7. Works will automatically be entered into the People’s Choice and First Prize (Acquisitive). Where applicable, works will also be entered automatically into the Resident Award.

  8. The City of Melville will acquire the First Prize (Acquisitive) by exchange for the cash value of the prize, and the work will be accessioned to the City of Melville’s Art Collection.

  9. Work must be original and completed after June 2016. Derivative works will only be accepted where copyright permission has been granted and a copy can be supplied.

  10. The City of Melville will not accept responsibility for the visual representation/ interpretation of any works. It is the artist’s responsibility to ensure that his/her work is not subject to liable, defamation of character or in violation of copyright laws.

  11. Works must be delivered suitably presented and ready for display/hanging (i.e. dry and properly affixed with cord/wire to hold weight of work).

  12. All works accepted will be judged. Please note that your work may not be displayed to your satisfaction owing to the large number of works and limited space. The City of Melville reserves the right not to hang all works.

  13. Work must not exceed 1m x 1m in any direction including frame. Any work over these dimensions, in fairness to other exhibitors, will not be accepted.

  14. Artists submitting 3D work should contact the Arts Officer to discuss requirements.

  15. The weight of the entry must not exceed 15kg for 2D works and 30kg for 3D works.

  16. All works must be for sale (except Youth Category). Sale price must include a 20% commission + GST if applicable.

  17. Entry Forms must be accompanied by the Administration Fee of $25.00 for Adult or $15.00 for Youth (inc. GST). This fee is not refundable.

  18. The City of Melville will appoint three judges to select the winners of the Awards. Judging will take place on Monday, 21 August 2017. The Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence or conversation will be entered into. If in the Judges’ opinion there is no entry of an adequate standard in any category, the Judges may refrain from making an award.

  19. The artist agrees to allow any work to be reproduced in part or whole by print or electronic media only for promotion of the Art Awards. Copyright remains the property of the artist.

  20. The artist agrees to allow any work that is purchased for the City of Melville Art Collection to be photographed for collection management and community education purposes.

  21. Works will not be covered by City of Melville insurance. The City of Melville will take all reasonable care, however, can accept no responsibility for damage, loss, fire, theft or vandalism. Artists are advised to provide their own insurance.

  22. Artists will receive payment, less commission, for any works sold by Friday, 29 September 2017.
