City of Casey: Supporting Children Learning English as an Additional Language in Kindergarten

FKA Children’s Services is pleased to announce the upcoming professional learning series Supporting Children Learning English as an Additional Language in Kindergarten. This professional learning is part of a suite of support available through the Kindergarten Cultural Inclusion Program delivered by FKA Children’s Services and funded by the Department of Education and Training. Type of event: Two-part professional learning series (3 hrs per session, 6 hrs total)

Dates: Part 1 Wednesday 30 August & Part 2 Wednesday 13 September 2017

Time: 2.30pm to 5.30pm (both dates)

*Please note, by booking Part 1 you are automatically booked to attend Part 2 (same venue, same time). All session details are included in the body of your confirmation email.

Who should attend?
Teachers and other early childhood professionals working in state funded Victorian kindergartens located in the City of Casey

Eligibility is strictly limited to:
State funded Victorian kindergartens located in the City of Casey only*
*In the interest of fairness and reach, tickets are limited to 1 participant per kindergarten service. Leaders or 'change agents' should attend in order to share and embed the learning within their service/educational program. Please check with your team or FKA Children's Services to find out if your service has already secured a ticket before registering. Additional participants can be added to the waitlist. About: Developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, early childhood development expert Dr Priscilla Clarke OAM and FKA Children’s Services, the series provides early childhood professionals with a clear understanding of the way children learn English as an additional language and how to support families raising children with multiple languages.

Originally delivered in three modules, this special two-part version has been revised specifically for early childhood professionals working in Victorian kindergartens.

Session Summaries
Part 1: Learning English as an Additional Language in Kindergarten
Explore the stages of additional language development and the role teachers have in supporting emerging English learners in kindergarten. Overview:

• Who are additional language learners?
• The importance of maintaining the first language
• Identity and self-esteem
• Factors affecting the learning of English as an additional language
• Stages of additional language development
• Oral language development
• Developing English in an inclusive environment
• The role of early childhood professionals
• Partnerships with families

Part 2: Achieving Outcomes in English as an Additional Language in Kindergarten
Build on knowledge of the developmental stages of language acquisition and explore the implications for curriculum development and assessment for children in kindergarten. Overview:

• Stages of additional language development
• Sustained shared communication
• Achieving outcomes
• Assessing outcomes
• Rates of acquisition
• Identifying language delay
