School of Rock (5-6) (SPECIAL NEEDS WORKSHOP) NEW

We are so excited to be able to offer a workshop to children with a special need.

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy is pleased to offer a “School of Rock” holiday program catering for children with special needs. The program is structured as 3 x 45 minute workshops where students are formed into a rock band and will culminate in a group band performance at night in front of family and friends, who will be astounded by the incredible progress achieved.

The participants will learn to play appropriate instruments and there will also be opportunities for singing. It will be an excellent way for students to discover an instrument they love and to learn social skills in working with others towards a group goal. It’s a great opportunity to develop new friendships and to gain self-esteem as a consequence of achieving a new skill and being able to perform it in front of a small supportive audience.

This program is best suited to those students with special needs who have an ability to learn, would like to play in a rock band, can assimilate information during the course of the day and then perform with the band that night.

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy is an inspirational not-for-profit organisation providing Clinical Music Therapy, Supported Music Lessons and Community Music programs. We service a broad range of clients including children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, speech and language disorders, emotional and behavioural difficulties and others. The program will be delivered by two Masters-qualified Registered Music Therapists, Rob Devlin and Jack Thomas. Rob has over 10 years’ experience as a music therapist providing music therapy in numerous settings working with many different clinical populations, including children and adults with a wide range of disabilities including autism spectrum disorder. Jack is Registered Music Therapist who has worked extensively with children and young adults with special needs. Both are accomplished rock musicians with many years’ experience playing and performing in a variety of bands.

Parents who are interested in their child being part of this workshop must be aware that Choctoberfest is a high sensory environment with large numbers of children (350 in 2016) and often loud noise and messy games. We will work to ensure this workshop has structure in place to help reduce anxiety but anyone wanting to apply for this workshop will need to complete the information questionare provided to them and the decision regarding participants remains with the expert presenters. Our goal is always to ensure that all children have the best experience while at Chocotberfest.
