Workshop description

Do your students have a deep understanding of multiplication and division concepts or are they human calculators? Do they value the process (thinking) rather than the product (answer)? When students think multiplicatively, they see an equal sharing structure. This understanding can then be applied to more complex thinking such as using the area model and fraction concepts.

The presenter, Anita Chin will show you how multiplication and division concepts build K-6, rather than being isolated content taught in each grade. For students to be thinkers, we need to revisit prior learning whilst teaching new content every lesson. Doing this can be a challenge as it requires us to know up to 7 years of content knowledge, as well as language development, an awareness of which visual models and equipment to use, all whilst differentiating our whole-class instruction. Is this even possible? Yes it is, and you can!

This hands-on workshop will empower you with tools and strategies to:

  • see how the ‘big ideas’ for multiplication and division progress K-6 by engaging with the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum
  • immerse your students in rich mathematical language every day
  • select tasks that are developmentally sequenced to meet the needs of all learners.

Participants will engage with classroom-ready whole-class differentiated tasks K-6, including the use of:

  • student whiteboard insert sleeves BLMs eg dot array, 1cm area grid
  • a range of dice eg. dot, 0-9, double, blank.

Blackline masters and an e-folder of resources provided.

What to bring

  • a hard copy of the NSW Mathematics K-6 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum (the 'orange book')
  • post-it notes
  • yellow highlighter
  • your 6-digit NESA number.
