Workshop description

Building strong foundations for student’s images of whole numbers and decimal numbers are key to understanding place value. However, many students struggle with the concept of ten-ness. This hands-on workshop presented by Anita Chin will empower educators with whole-school tools and strategies to ‘do more with less’ by using whole-class differentiated resources to cater for the needs of all learners.

Participants will engage with appropriate tools to differentiate instruction to meet the wide range of needs and abilities in a mixed-ability and/or multi-aged classroom by experiencing a range of developmentally sequenced tasks K-6 which make mathematics visible by using:

  • Five- and ten-frames
  • A range of number charts e.g. 1 to 100, 701 to 800, 0.1 to 10, 0.01 to 1, -49 to 50.

We will explore tasks, tools and talk that support a whole-school approach to students operating with place value concepts to help students make sense of part-part-whole thinking and non-standard partitioning. Whole-class instruction strategies modelled for differentiating both the concept being taught and the concrete materials used include using:

  • Five- and ten-frames to ‘celebrate zero’
  • Number charts to ‘celebrate ten-ness’
  • Proportional models such as connecting cubes and base-ten material to ‘Make it, saw it, draw it, write it’ using technical and everyday language
  • Number fans when asking good-open ended questions

Blackline masters and links to resources provided, including access to videos of Anita Chin’s in-class demonstration lessons.
