Description

ChinUP K-6: Developing Rich Open-Ended Tasks

ChinUP professional learning events are 2-hour after-school workshops hosted by primary schools across NSW, QLD and the ACT. ChinUPs are designed for teams of up to eight educators and are open to anyone, from any sector and any school.

Who should attend?

  • Class teachers
  • Mathematics/Numeracy leaders

Workshop description

In the mathematics classroom, it is through tasks, more than in any other way, that opportunities to learn are made available to the students (Anthony and Walshaw, 2007). This practical, interactive workshop presented by Tim Waugh will explore ways in which teachers can use a variety of images – including photographs from the real world – to:

  • create tasks that are challenging and non-routine (rather than procedural, routine and low-challenge)
  • create open-ended tasks out of ‘closed’ tasks
  • provide opportunities for rich, meaningful mathematics tasks
  • make authentic connections between and within syllabus sub-strands to create their own rich, ‘low floor, high ceiling’ mathematical tasks that enable students to demonstrate the depth of their conceptual understanding.

Participants will focus on two important questions to consider when planning and will gain an understanding of how and when to look for opportunities in unexpected places. They are:

  • Where is the mathematics?
  • What are the opportunities?

Educators will leave the workshop with their own bank of images and tasks and ideas for ‘Where to next?’
