Event description

Description

Join Dr Dan Chen, assistant professor of political science and Asian studies at Elizabethtown College and visiting fellow at the China Studies Centre, in a reading group gathering on 30 August. The reading group is designed to spark conversations on the recent socioeconomic and political developments in China. It aims to inspire exchange of creative ideas for research and understanding in a friendly and supportive environment. This event is open to graduate students from any university with an interest in Chinese politics and society.

To capture the kaleidoscopic, continually changing Chinese society is not easy. Journalistic accounts often provide reliable, accessible, and fresh takes on a society in transformation. Evan Osnos’s Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China by Evan Osnos (New York : Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2015), which won the 2014 National Book Award for nonfiction, offers unique and careful observations of average Chinese from all walks of life. For those who are interested in understanding China, this book is an informative and enjoyable read.

The reading material, which will be provided to successful applicants, for this group will be two chapters from this book: 7. Acquired Taste and 11. A Chorus of Soloists. Participants are encouraged to read the texts prior to the gathering.
