Description

Join children's author and literacy advocate Yvonne Mes in this exclusive masterclass as she shares her insights into incorporating the latest in child development research into Kidlit. When writing for children as adults we have a different perspective of the word around us to the children we write for. We think back on our own childhoods and study the children around us, however, we can also look at theories of child development such as the development of humour, cognitive development, moral development and take into account the latest on brain development and child psychology. We may not know what each particular child will love in a story, but we can understand why a child is more likely to connect with a story at a particular age or phase of development.

Yvonne Mes is a children’s author and illustrator from Brisbane. She writes fiction and non-fiction in the form of picture books, junior fiction and short stories.

Her picture book Meet Sidney Nolan (Penguin Random House) is listed on the 2016 Premier's Reading Challenge. Her picture book Oliver's Grumbles (Dragon Tales Publishing) was released in 2015.

Her short stories are published in The School Magazine, on the Kids Book Review website and as part of anthologies.

Yvonne has almost two decades of experience working with children of all ages, abilities, and cultures. She has a Bachelor of Children's Services a Certificate in Professional Children's Writing, and qualifications and experience as a vocational teacher.

She coordinates Write Links, the Brisbane children's writers and group, is vice president of Book Links QLD (Inc.) and a mentor for the Writer's Surgery at the Queensland Writers Centre.

Yvonne’s stories broaden perspectives, connect people, and invite feelings.
