Event description
The evolution of cinemagoing in and around Port Adelaide

About this event

The Semaphore Library is an outstanding example of our ability to adapt our built environment to the changing times.

Beginning life in 1884 as the Mechanics Institute, this vibrant building has also served over time as a town hall, a community centre and a live events space, but is most fondly remembered by many as the Semaphore Ozone cinema.

Generations of movie-goers have gazed in delight at the amazing interior of this former iconic picture palace, in anticipation of the wonders they were about to experience on the silver screen.

Join us inside this repurposed and beautifully preserved heritage space as cinema historian Dylan Walker recounts the phenomenon of cinemagoing in the Port Adelaide area over time from the days of the silent movies to the end of World War II.
