Overview:

This presentation will focus on the challenging context of education research in Australia. It will first focus on the challenges and opportunities in renewing the academic and research workforce in Australian education research, drawing particularly from the work conducted by the Australian Council of Deans of Education (ACDE, 2010) and a larger project sponsored by the Australian Association of Research in Education and the ACDE (Seddon et al, 2012).

The presentation will then focus on two research projects with which I have been involved focussing on larger questions for women's work and career development (Bimrose et al, 2015; Doherty, Patton & Shield, 2015). Each of these projects emphasises the gendered issues for women in developing work trajectories, and within the context of the first section of the presentation, research careers in the academy.

Finally, as a former Dean of a large Faculty of Education, and within the focus of changing the discourse, I will outline systemic strategies with which to intentionally build research capacity of staff within education faculties. In addition, I will share some personal strategies to build and maintain personal research momentum in busy and changing work contexts
