Description

Considering life as a rural GP?

Tickets are still available on the Central Vic GP Jaunt where you will find out about place-based general practice pathways and advanced skills training opportunities. Come and find your passion and place as a rural GP as we tour Central Victoria.

The GP Jaunt will depart from Castlemaine railway station at 9am sharp and travel by mini-bus to visit local health services and clinics in the towns of Castlemaine, Maryborough and Kyneton. This place-based tour will connect you with some of the region's established medical fraternity, enable you to see first-hand the facilities, learn about the stimulating caseloads and practices.

The trip will also highlight the region’s great lifestyle, imposing boom-time architecture, thriving food and wine culture and artsy cosmopolitan vibe; we’ll demonstrate why Central Victoria is one of Australia's most desirable regional locations, thanks to a strong, diversified economy, supportive community, affordable housing and enviable lifestyle. Explore some smaller towns and hear from local leaders - we will tour via historic Maldon and innovative Newstead. Enjoy the best coffee and French pastries, drive by the Blue Pyrenees winery, see the many beautiful views and enjoy lunch in the Newstead Community Gardens.

For a busy medical student or early practitioner frustrated by the daily grind of a hectic metro lifestyle, practising in beautiful regional Victoria makes perfect sense. Come for the training and work opportunities, stay for the lifestyle – find your passion!

This fully catered, free, fun and informative event is open to everyone, from Junior Doctors and Medical students interested in training as a GP. The jaunt is hosted by two local GPs: Dr Mark Farrugia (Recipient of RWAV's 2019 Rural Doctor Award Outstanding Contribution) and Dr Richard Mayes, (the dancing doctor!) and has been co-ordinated by the Monash Regional Training Hub for North West Victoria, and is supported by Deakin's South West Regional Training Hub, MCCC GP Training and the Lodon Mallee and Grampians Rural Community Intern Programs. (Maryborough falls under the Deakin/Grampians Rural Community Intern Program and has strong links to Ballarat Hospital).
