About this Event

REGISTRATION 6pm

COMMENCING 6.30pm

The rate of people living with intellectual disabilities (ID) and comorbid mental illness is increasing in NSW. Estimates for the proportion of the population with an ID range between approximately 1-2 per cent. Expert opinion suggests that approximately 40 per cent of people with an intellectual disability have a mental disorder. Despite the over representation of mental disorders in people with an ID, access to specialist mental health services for this cohort remains limited.

The NSW Health Intellectual Disability and Mental Health National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Residual Functions Program was established to support enhancements to services for this client group. As part of this project locally, Central Coast Local Health District in partnership with Central Coast Primary Care and the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network are hosting an event for local GP’s.

Professor Julian Troller will speak about; factors that may complicate the mental health assessment of someone with an intellectual disability; ways in which to adapt the mental health assessment process; and principles that may guide the management of this client group.

Professor Julian Trollor is a neuropsychiatrist and holds the inaugural Chair of Intellectual Disability Mental Health at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He also heads the Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry within the School of Psychiatry at UNSW.
