 John Sheedy CEO of Theatreworks

We welcome our 16th guest John Sheedy, CEO of Theatre Works on Friday 4 August

John grew up in Torquay, and caught the theatre bug through youth theatre. Studying at the National Drama School in Melbourne and The National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney, he completed a Masters of Fine Art (Directing) in 2002.

He went on to direct several plays for B Sharp theatre (an offshoot of the Belvoir Street) Darlinghurst Theatre, Parramatta Riverside, Griffin Stablemates and CarriageWorks as well working as Assistant Director to Neil Armfield, Julian Meyrick and Richard Cottrell.

In 2008 he travelled OS working with Edward Albee in New York and Cicely Berry at the National Theatre in London. Over 2008-10, he directed the Actors at Work Program for the Bell Shakespeare Company touring extensively to schools across Australia.

In 2010, he became the Artistic Director for the Barking Gecko Theatre Company in WA. Focussing on theatre for children and young adults, his productions soon attracted national interest, with Jasper Jones, Storm Boy and The Rabbits touring nationally.

In 2016, he returned to Melbourne as CEO of Theatre Works vowing to build on international and local partnerships with emerging actors and directors, and other production companies. He has expanded  the innovative Directors Lab program and over seen the introduction of the Associate Artists program and Masterclass Seriesas well as co-ordinating 8 productions (including Joan CREATED BY THE RABBLE and All Of My Friends Were There BY THE GUERRILLA MUSEUM) and an Artist in Residency program.

John will join us for breakfast at the Cedar Bakery on 4 August to talk about his theatre career and opportunities for theatrical artists.
