Making decisions for your club:
The legal risks… and the legal protections available to club board or committee members and club managers.
Do you hold a position of governance in a club? Are you on the board or committee, or a club manager?
If so…congratulations! We all know that not-for-profit clubs provide much needed facilities, support and entertainment for their local communities…and they couldn’t run well without leaders like you.
But do you fully understand what being in a position of governance means? How does the law view your role? Have you ever wondered what would happen if something went wrong? And are you clear about the standard the law sets for the decisions you make for the club? Make sure you come to this training to know the answers to these questions and many more.
Why should I go?
On completion of this training, club board or committee members and club managers will understand the key legal risks of their role and the simple steps they can take to make sure they protect themselves from liability.
What will be covered?
Topics will include:
the role of club board or committee members and others who ‘govern’ or ‘make decisions for’ the club
the 4 key legal duties of board or committee members
potential liabilities, and the legal defences and protections are available for club board or committee members
simple actions that board or committee members can be taken to comply with the law and protect against liability
Will it be relevant for my club?
This training is designed for people involved in clubs of all sizes, and both of the common legal structures:
clubs incorporated in Victoria as an incorporated association reporting to Consumer Affairs Victoria
clubs incorporated as a company limited by guarantee reporting to ASIC
Who is presenting:
CCV has engaged Not-for-profit Law to provide this training. The training facilitator will be a specialist not-for-profit lawyer with experience presenting plain-language training to community groups.
When is it and how long will it take?
In just two short hours you will find out all you need to know to ensure you understand your governance obligations. We will conduct several sessions throughout the state over the coming 12 months.
*Please arrive at 6pm for some light refreshments prior to the commencement of training.
