Jeltje Jansen-Buijtendorp

I have been working with ceramics since high school and was reintroduced to it in 2010 when I joined a course at the local community college. After that I was hooked again and applied for the ceramics course at Hornsby TAFE. Unfortunately, the re-organisation of the TAFE system signalled the end of that learning path for me and I decided to invest in my own studio. Since then, I have been working from my small backyard studio, creating mostly functional items for everyday use.

Working with clay is always very satisfying - from the meditative serenity of throwing on the wheel, the structural possibilities of building with slaps to the science of slip casting. I love to play with different clays, colours, textures, and techniques - aiming to create individual handcrafted items that can be mixed and matched as the mood inspires.

I look forward helping my students explore the beauty of clay and to assist them in achieving the best possible result.

Students of differing levels of expertise will be accommodated within this class. This is a 4 week term, so for beginners we will focus on creating items using slap moulds. For more experienced students, we can determine what the project will be and work together to achieve the best possible outcome. Experienced students are welcome to work on the wheels. To make the most of the time available, I would suggest that students with some experience determine their project before the course starts.

An important change for this short term is the glazing; to give students more time to work on their projects, teachers will glaze the items after week 4 in either clear or white glaze. Students will be contacted when their items are ready for pickup.

Bring along own towel and apron. Covered shoes are essential.

Week 1

Overview of the course, introduction to clay and the ceramic process, main tools and their uses, clay preparation techniques (wedging), intro to pinching and coiling techniques. Start project for this short term.

Week 2

Continue making and concentrate on refining forms. Prepare items for first firing.

Week 3

Continue making and concentrate on refining forms. Prepare items for first firing.

Week 4

Students to finalise their items and apply underglazes where desired.
