Jeltje Jansen-Buijtendorp

I have been working with ceramics since high school and was reintroduced to it in 2010 when I joined an introduction course throwing on the wheel at the local community college. After that I was hooked again and applied for the ceramics course at Hornsby TAFE. Unfortunately, the re-organisation of the TAFE system signalled the end of that learning path for me and I decided to invest in my own studio. Since then, I have been working from a small backyard studio, creating mostly functional items for everyday use.

Working with clay is always very satisfying - from the meditative serenity of throwing on the wheel, the structural possibilities of building with slaps to the science of slip casting. I love to play with different clays, colours, textures, and techniques - aiming to create individual handcrafted items that can be mixed and matched as the mood inspires.

I look forward helping my students explore the beauty of throwing on the wheel and to assist them in achieving the best possible result.

Bring along your own towel and apron. Covered shoes are essential.

The primary focus of this course is learning the basics of wheel forming. Students will learn to throw basic shapes and get an introduction to the ceramic process. By the end of term, each student should have a number of glazed items to take home.

Week 1 Overview of the course, CCPS plus Health and Safety rules, introduction to clay and the ceramic process, main tools and their uses, clay preparation techniques (wedging), demonstrations on centring clay on the wheel, students practising centring clay on the wheel with guidance from the tutor.

Week 2 Refresher on wedging clay and centring clay on the wheel, demonstrations on ‘opening out’ and ‘pulling up’, compressing bases – to create cylindrical forms on the wheel. Students create cylindrical forms on the wheel with guidance from the tutor.

Week 3 Discussion and demonstration on turning/trimming leather hard pots, students turn/trim their forms, students continue to make cylindrical forms on the wheel. Demonstration of throwing bowls on the wheel, students practice throwing bowl forms on the wheel.

Week 4 & 5 Students continuing to practice and create more cylinder and bowls forms on the wheel and turn/trim leather hard work.

Week 6 Turning/trimming of all cylinder and bowl forms. Learning about and applying decorative techniques, liquid underglaze colours and tissue transfers. All work is finished this session and ready for bisque firing (the first firing).

Week 7 Kiln unpacked, discussion of glazes and glaze application, glaze demonstrations (dipping, pouring), students apply glazes to all their work for final firing.

Week 8 Finalise glazing of works, discussion of results

On completing this course, students will have developed skills in:

• knowing a variety of clay bodies;

• wedging and weighing clay;

• centring a ball of clay on the pottery wheel;

• throwing a basic shape;

• turning a foot on a basic shape;

• introduction to kilns and different glaze applications, decorating techniques.
