Rachel Bunney Figurative Sculpture - An Interest in Owls

About this event

A figurative sculpture course providing an introduction to creating sculptural forms.

Dates: Run over two consecutive Sundays - 21st and 28th August 2022

Time: Sundays 10- 3pm

Duration: 2 Weeks

Cost: $250

Rachel has been teaching figurative sculpture regularly at CCPS for the past five years with a local studio and regular involvement in many local art shows and events she has become an established artist and teacher. Much of Rachel’s work focuses on raising awareness about the environment, she uses stylised forms and poetry with a particular interest in our endangered fauna. She has created two solo shows at her supporting gallery @GalleryONE88 in Katoomba with another two shows delayed due to lockdowns and as well as being invited to contribute to numerous Central Coast Art events she runs community eco-art workshops for children at both the Terrigal Marine Discovery Centre and Kariong Eco Garden. Rachel has developed expertise in using BRT clay to achieve varied sculptural forms and with a finish in Acrylics and sealants that enable her work to inhabit either home and garden.

Owls are captivating in their appearance, illusive in their behaviour, and hold varying forms of magical power in many cultures. Many species of owl are also endangered due to diminishing habitats and poisoning of food sources. This is an opportunity to create your own owl for home or garden as well as an introduction to creating sculptural forms from an easy structural foundation in BRT clay. The fun is in creating personality and your owl can be as anatomically correct, stylised, or abstract as you like.

What to bring: Photos of species of owls that interest or connect with you. Wildlife photos are preferable to art as your work becomes more authentically you and the more detail and bigger the pics the better…….I often use themed calendars for images.

In addition the following essential items:

  • A strong work board, approx. 30cm diameter and at least 1.5 cm thick. A round chopping board works well.
  • Sharp, flat paring knife(not serrated).
  • Hand Towel.
  • Water container.
  • Paper towel.
  • Plastic bags.
  • Bring tools if you have them and I will be sharing what I have to help you create the look you want.

NB: 2/3 bag BRT clay and firing is included in payment however please note that finishing ie glazing is not. You will receive instruction on finishing your work with acrylics so as they are suitable for the outdoors.

Looking forward to two fun days of exploring the world of owls!
