Description

Practice as Research Network - ARC Masterclasses, National Series, pre-ACUADS Conference

Wednesday 30 October - 9:00am-5:00pm, Megaflex 1 (Building 8, Level 4, Room 11)

This is the second of two advanced one day masterclasses are aimed at Australian practice-led researchers with an interest in applying for ARC funding. It will suit those who:

  • are university academics who are practice-led researchers
  • have a completed (or nearly completed) PhD
  • have an ambitious research project in development
  • are aiming to develop or enhance ARC grant writing skills
  • are seeking to make contact with like-minded researchers to build research teams
  • want to tap into Australia-wide practice-led research networks for support and knowledge sharing

We will be covering:

  • the purpose of the ARC
  • how the different grant categories are positioned
  • who the ARC targets as applicants
  • grant guidelines
  • how to form interdisciplinary teams
  • specialised ARC grant writing
  • ARC timetabling and budgeting expectations
  • resources and support within and beyond universities.

Due to our small numbers, we are also able to tailor each session to the knowledge of the group and the focus of the grant category, while providing a general overview.

Research Whisperer Jonathan O'Donnell will facilitate a development process aimed at understanding the key elements of ARC funding, such as understanding your audience; developing your project; and writing your application. Each participant will then draft or revise key elements of an ARC application in an environment of mutual exchange. Designed to build on the immediate knowledge of the masterclass, this will ensure each researcher walks away with a first draft of an application for future development.

Run by Research Whisperer Jonathan O'Donnell, and CAST Coordinator Rose Lang, the session will share the benefits of their collective expertise. Jonathan O'Donnell has honed the skills of thousands of researchers seeking support for creative research of all kinds. His big-picture approach, up-to-the-minute knowledge and collaborative style usefully de-mystify this sphere of research endeavour. Rose Lang has been designing and implementing strategic creative programs for artists, researchers, writers and curators for many years. She brings an insider's understanding of contemporary art, and critical practices of what it means to work as a practice-led researcher.

The Practice as Research workshops sit within the framework of our newly established, cross-university Practice as Research Network and is undertaken in partnership with Monash University, the University of Melbourne and with grant support from ACUADS.

A large number of places are prioritised for non-Victorian practice-led researchers. Please register here for these places (join the waiting list if class is full). We will endeavour to meet demand as fully as possible. The remainder are by personal nomination from the partner institutions, RMIT, Monash or Melbourne Universities, though if these places are not used, they are made open to others. If you are an interested Victorian researcher at another institution, please make contact with Rose Lang at cast@rmit.edu.au or 03 9925 1017, Monday-Wednesday. We would like these sessions to be as accessible as they can be.

There is no charge for non-Victorian applicants, but all attendees are responsible for their own transport and accommodation costs. Places are limited to 25 in total. Early registration is strongly encouraged.
