Overview

This workshop introduces the foundations for communicating effectively with someone affected by cancer.

This workshop is for people in non-client facing roles who are interested in learning more about supporting and communicating effectively with a person affected by cancer. You may come into contact with people with cancer but it is not part of your daily job.

During this training you will:

  • Discuss the importance of effective communication, including active listening and empathy
  • Explore how to use appropriate cancer language in a conversation
  • Develop and practise your own phrases in response to emotional statements
  • Identify and discuss communication strategies for referring on, progressing conversations after emotional disclosures and ending conversations
  • Explore the impact of a cancer on a person, their family, friends and the wider community

The workshop involves active learning opportunities through group discussions, video analysis and reflective activities.

What our participants have said about the workshop:

"A really safe space to talk and discuss was created with lots of room for questions. Providing practical examples such as the actual phrases to use was helpful."

"It was a very detailed and thought provoking session overall - it definitely has me feeling much better equipped going into any future conversations!"

Certificates for CPD will be provided upon course completion.
