ONE-DAY WORKSHOP:

'From Empty Page to Mic and Stage'

A one-day poetry workshop with writing in the morning and tips on 'performing' your work in the afternoon.

Morning Session:

10.00am Arrival and morning tea

10.30-1.00pm ‘Don’t get it right, get it written’

Introductions:

Chrys will explore a few personal approaches and problems. Blocks? Where we find ideas?

Poetry can make outrageous linkages, odd conjunctions and associations. It gives us permission to say things of which we don’t yet know the meaning. How do I know what I think until I hear what I say?’ said EM Forster. It’s a special way of weaving words together creating the ripples on the surface of a deeper idea, with nothing in the way to block the route from the impulse to the page. But coming up with a starting place can be difficult.

Where and how can we begin?

Chrys will take you on a roller-coaster journey into the imagination by using a series of writing exercises to get you started, engender new and exciting ways of seeing the world. Results will be shared and discussed so participants can learn from each other in a safe, friendly, light-hearted atmosphere. The aim is to have fun, write differently, and discover new pleasures in our texts.

1.00-1.30pm Lunch break

Afternoon Session (includes afternoon tea break)

1.30-4.30pm. 'Make your writing speak.'

Performing a poem is an acting job, not a ‘reading aloud job! '

There s no reason on earth why poets should be good performers and while Chrys says she can’t teach you to act in an afternoon, she can pass on quite a few ‘tricks of the trade’. Under Chrys's guidance, participants will focus on four elements of the process, exploring tone, pace, preparation and communication using the work of established poets as examples.
