Pathways to Becoming a Speech Pathology Assistant: please arrive by 12:45pm ready for a 1:00pm start.
A Speech Pathology Assistant can be referred to as a SPA. SPAs play an important role to support clients and their families with communication skills by working under the direct and indirect supervision of the speech pathologist. SPAs work in the speech pathology clinic, preschool, school or client home to implement speech and language programs.
This half day workshop is a follow on from the Free Information Session: Working as a Speech Pathology Assistant.
The following topics are covered at the half day workshop:
•Level 1 SPAs – defining what it means to work with direct supervision from a speech pathologist
•Level 2 SPAs – working with direct and indirect supervision
•Determining suitability for Level 1 or Level 2 work based on skills and knowledge of the SPA
•Past experience relevant to being a SPA - a look at previous roles, including paid and unpaid work
•What a prospective employer might be looking for in a SPA
•Steps to take to prepare for working as a SPA
•Information about our face to face and online training courses at All Areas Speech Pathology
•Assistance to choose a pathway forward to work as a SPA or even a Speech Pathologist!
Get involved in some speech and language program activities:
- Learn some key word signing
- Practice listening to a speech sample and identifying what the child or adult is saying
- Discuss ways to give specific "labelled" praise to assist a client to improve their communication attempts
Each attendee is eligible to attend a face to face or telephone call 15 minute one on one session either immediately after the workshop or in the 7 days following the workshop to discuss individual circumstances and possible pathways forward.
