Event description

Description

Abstract: Risk and uncertainty are everywhere in social affairs and raise challenges for the normative evaluation of policy. This lecture will lead the audience through three key problems: 1) Is it rational to rely on other approaches than expected utility? 2) What is the relative importance of ex ante fairness and ex post inequalities? 3) Should individuals bear the consequences of the risks they take?

Marc Fleurbaey, Robert E. Kuenne Professor in Economics and Humanistic Studies, Professor of Public Affairs and the University Center for Human Values, Princeton University

Bio: Marc Fleurbaey is an economist, teaching at Princeton University. He is the author of Fairness, Responsibility, and Welfare (2008), a co-author of Beyond GDP (with Didier Blanchet, 2013), A Theory of Fairness and Social Welfare (with François Maniquet, 2011), and the coeditor of several books, including the Oxford Handbook of Well-Being and Public Policy (with Matt Adler, 2016). He has been a coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is one of the initiators of the International Panel on Social Progress.
