Description

Be inspired and captivated by the Cambodia Rural School Trust's first Student-Ambassador visit to Australia! Sompeas and Veun are travelling from Siem Reap to Australia and will share a little about their lives before joining the NGO, life as members of CRST and our community volunteer activities...

As the only female in CRST’s Ambassador program, Sompeas Sokh is a leader and role model for other girls and is proving that girls don’t have to remain in the rice fields or in poverty. “I never agreed with Cambodian culture, which says women should be submissive housewives and men should be leaders and decision makers,” Sompeas says. “I believe men and women are equal and education provides girls with the knowledge to believe this and the skills to enable us to follow our dreams, have amazing careers and be even greater contributors to society,” she says.

Six years ago Veun Voan did not think he would finish high school but today he is in his third year of an International Relations degree in Siem Reap’s best university. “Even though I worked every day while I studied in high school, my family could not afford the little money I needed to finish school,” Veun says. "Joining CRST changed my life and is giving me amazing opportunities to help so many more people in our society. I am looking forward to sharing my story with Australians so they can understand a little bit about life in rural Cambodia and the incredible difference education can make,” he says.
