Event description

Description

Do you have what it takes to be a human rabbit?

Would you like to take part in an exciting street art action with an internationally renowned art collective?

RMIT Gallery is looking for volunteers for "HUMAN RABBITS", a street action by Spanish collective mmmm.... that will take place through the streets around RMIT Gallery in Melbourne, on Friday July 28 from 12 pm to 2 pm.

The group action will take place as part of mmmm... a large retrospective exhibition of the collective's work at RMIT Gallery from 21 July - 9 September.

Fifty human rabbits invade downtown Melbourne. Fifty people, women and men, walk the streets and laneways of the city scattered or in herd, wearing big rabbit cardboard-heads on their shoulders. They walk fast, and suddenly stop from time to time, often looking sideways.

This thought-provoking street action is specifically designed to be held in Australia.

"In Australia, rabbits have negative connotations of invasive animals that destroy the local ecosystem, but universally rabbits are seen as cute and cuddly animals, and are considered pets in many countries. These contradictory associations, negative and positive, openly reflect with a touch of humour about the concepts of immigration, invasion, group, and identity," the collective said.

If you would like to participate - or know someone who may feel like participating - please spread the word (fast...like...rabbits!!!) Everybody is welcome, what matters is the attitude.

* Please note: all volunteers must be over the age of 18. There is no upper age limit.

Everyone who registers will be contacted and asked to send their contact information including name, contact number, email and their motivation for being involved (briefly, one line will suffice) by June 15.

Please note - people will be notifed if they have been chosen to take part, and will then be expected to attend a training session the week before the action on Tuesday July 18, 4-5 pm at RMIT. Details will be sent to successful applicants.

Please note:

This action is totally safe. Participants will have good frontal visibility, which will allow them to wander, use their hands and breathe comfortably. The reduced weight of the cardboard-head makes the head easily transported for a long time without causing tiredness. If you don't feel like travelling alone as a rabbit - you can go in pairs. Our rabbits are friendly.

A gift to you:

The rabbit heads will be given to the volunteers once the action is finished in order to thank them for their participation. (See the photo of a similar action in Madrid using bull's heads)

Who are mmmm...?

mmmm... is a Madrid-based art collective that has been producing art in the public space since 1998. They have developed works such as BUS, Brick Car, Money to Read and Bull’s Head. More information: www.mmmm.tv

This action is part of the exhibition "mmmm..." at RMIT Gallery (July 21 - September 9, 2017) that will be presenting a survey of the collective’s playful and thought-provoking projects from 2000 through 2016, exploring the common ground of their seemingly disparate ventures.
