Event Details

SWVR RR Teams invite our regional and RR statewide colleagues to participate in this one day training offered by the Centre for Multicultural Women's Health.  In the training participants will learn:

  • current evidence base for understanding violence against women in immigrant and refugee communities.

  • how the gendered drivers of violence against women are intersected by other systems and structures.

  • how to apply intersectional theory to violence prevention intiatives.

  • how to engage immigrant, refugee and faith communities in violence prevention

Intersectional theory and practice will be explored in the context of  prevetion of violence against women and respectful relationships however the models presented are applicable across a range of health promotion and wellbeing areas.

"The consideration of how people experience multiple, intersecting forms of discrimination and disadvantage is referred to as ‘intersectionality’.  Best practice prevention work must be inclusive of those who experience significant disadvantage and discrimination, and therefore be responsive to differing needs and contexts."
- Putting Prevention into Practice, Our Watch (2017)

A holistic and truly universal approach to prevention involves challenging not only gendered inequality, but other kinds of structural inequalities, negative stereotypes and discrimination, including those based on Aboriginality, disability, class, socio-economic status, ethnicity, religion, sexual and gender identity and refugee status.
