Cake Wines presents - Midnight Swim Label Showcase (Vivid 2017)
Fri., 16/06/2017, 6:00 pm – Sat., 17/06/2017, 12:00 am AEST
Midnight Swim is an independent record label, radio show and music consultancy company. Based in Sydney, we have a broad and open outlook, celebrating the richness, diversity and quality of soulful music coming from all corners of the globe. The label showcase is about bringing together artists, friends and family that have released on the label or have forthcoming material in the works to represent our vision in joining the dots of soulful music from across the world, free from the restrictions of being bound by genre, tempo or style. Built on a simple ethos around finding music that moves us, build a community with like-minded people and create/share/exchange, we are so excited to have them down at the Cellar Door.
Steve Spacek (LIVE)
Multifaceted musician Steve Spacek explores the intersection of the past, present and future. As a vocalist and producer, his work transcends genre and style — instead focusing more on swing, melody, vibe and atmosphere. With a deep catalogue and legendary output, Steve has covered work with the band Spacek – Curvatia and Vintage Hi-Tech; solo material on the cult Sound In Color imprint; collaborations with the late, great J.Dilla; and the underground classic, Black Pocket project for dBridge's Exit Records.
More recent work spawned a collaboration with Mark Pritchard as one half of Africa HiTech, along with releases on the highly coveted Ninja Tune and Eglo record labels, and the creation of his own imprint SPA in 2015 to explore even more musical territory. As a purveyor of futuristic soul, his fearless approach to creation has always been progressive and highly original, making him a much loved and respected name around the world.
Peret Mako (LIVE)
Peret Mako is a Sydney based DJ, producer and sound designer with recent releases on the Midnight Swim and Multiculti imprints. His interactive audio installation, "Circuit Sequentials" was featured as a part of Vivid's 2015 festival. Joining him on keys is Sydney jazz funk legend, Scott Saunders, known best for his groundbreaking work with bands, D.I.G and Multiball.
Cardboard Heroes (LIVE)
Cardboard Heroes is the brainchild of Ross Ferraro (The Goods, The Possé) and keyboard wiz Daniel Pliner (Dereb The Ambassador, The Strides). Starting it's life as a studio project they released their debut EP 'Liftoff' in 2016, a collection of psychedelic hip hop instrumentals. The group now takes on a second life as the duo return to their instruments to create a brand new live show — with Ferraro on drums and Pliner on keys, they have found a meeting point for their love of beats and electronic music and the energy and spirit of jazz improvisation. They now also welcome a third member, none other than Jarrol Renaud (also of The Goods) on bass and electronics. The high energy show is a concoction of heavily improvised hip hop, house, broken beat, bass music and world rhythms.
