Event description

Description

The Cairns Tropical Writers Festival is pleased to host Richard Fidler as our Literary Dinner guest.

Richard is a writer and broadcaster who presents Conversations with Richard Fidler, an in-depth, up-close-and-personal interview program broadcast across Australia on ABC Radio throughout the week.

Conversations is the most popular podcast in Australia, averaging over three million downloads every month.

In a former life Richard was a member of Australian comedy trio The Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS), which played to audiences all over the world.

Richard is now the author of two bestselling books - Ghost Empire: a journey to the legendary Constantinople, and Saga Land: the islands of stories at the edge of the world written with co-author and friend Kári Gíslason. They travelled to Iceland together.

You can find out more about Richard here: http://www.richard-fidler.com/

At the dinner, Richard will be interviewed in a reverse turn-the-tables Conversations with Richard Fidler by Geordie Williamson, with Richard in the hot-seat.

Geordie is chief literary critic at The Australian, a position he has held since 2008, though his essays and reviews have been appearing in newspapers and magazines here and in the UK for over a decade. In 2011, he won the Pascall Prize for criticism, Australia’s only major national prize awarded for critical writing. Geordie's book, The Burning Library: Our Great Novelists Lost and Found (Text Publishing), explores the lives and work of some of our greatest novelists. Alarmed by the increasingly marginal status of Australian literature in the academy, Williamson set out to reintroduce us to those key writers whose works we may have forgotten or missed altogether. The Burning Library is a dynamic act of reclamation inspired by Miles Franklin’s claim that a nation that fails to acknowledge its literary treasures is ‘neither preserved nor developed, but only defaced’.

A former publisher of Picador Australia, Geordie is also Editor at Large of Island magazine in Tasmania, where he lives. More at : https://www.textpublishing.com.au/books/the-burning-library

Collins Booksellers will be on site and Richard will sign books.
