Event description

Description

Cadfor has run a series of Cattle Information Days open to all cattle breeders. The Autumn 2018 Cattle Information Day will focus on Cattle Health. Our keynote speaker will be Dr Peter Kirkland, Senior Principal Research Scientist and Leader of the Virology Laboratory at Elizabeth Macarthur Agriculture Institute, Menangle. Dr Kirkland is a virologist of world renown whose work on cattle diseases will be of vital interest to cattle producers.

Dr Kirkland will be speaking on:

  • Understanding Pestivirus (Bovine Virus Diarrhoea / Mucosal disease) - the insidious but common cause of infertility, abortions, calf deaths and poor doers.
  • Vaccination strategies - recent research simplifies the integration of vaccination protocols into cattle management.
  • Arboviruses (diseases spread by insects). What threat is posed by climate change and what can cattle producers do to avoid trouble?

Most cattle producers in the Tablelands calve in spring. About now, producers should be pregnancy testing their herds to identify non pregnant cows which can be sold before winter. The Information Day will also cover the common causes of infertility, abortion and neonatal calf losses. How common is infertility or abortion due to vibriosis or leptospirosis? Action needed to prevent these losses should be included in your Biosecurity Plan.

As has become routine at the Cattle Information days, Cadfor partner, Helena Warren, will give a brief update on the feeding strategy of the Cadfor herd taking into account the current seasonal conditions and the requirements of the different classes of cattle. Helena will also discuss trial work that Cadfor is undertaking on acid soils.
