The International Women’s Day Cocktail Reception is a perfect launching pad for our 2019 theme ‘Courage’. It will be a year for us to appreciate women from all walks of life who simply - get things done and have used the challenges in life to propel them further into ownership of their own power. These are women with the talent, resilience, courage, agility, energy, commitment and ingenuity to pursue their dreams to succeed. Courage is one of the pillars of Resilience and this year, the BUWN will explore how Courage enables us to striking a balance between fear and confidence, courage is a choice to confront uncertainty and stand strong. Our members demonstrate courage throughout their daily lives in many forms, including letting go of the familiar to explore new horizons, persevering through adversity, and following one’s heart. We look forward to exploring this theme in our series of events throughout 2019.

Master of Ceremonies: Professor Derek Carson

Derek, a Professor of Applied Cognitive Psychology, was appointed as the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Society and Design in 2018. He is an advocate of interdisciplinary and translational research and believes universities need to challenge themselves to work more with industry and other stakeholders. In line with this, he has worked in partnership with police forces, the criminal justice service, engineers, and clinicians when researching forensic mental health issues and the psychology underpinning pure and applied face recognition.

Special Guest Speaker: Senior Constable Lucy Taylor, Queensland Police Service

Lucy will share her journey as a female member of the Australian Defence Forces and now as a Queensland Police Officer. Join us to hear Lucy reflect on her many experiences, including her service in Afghanistan where she had significant engagement with the local women. Lucy will share her experience of the courage shown by ordinary women when they find themselves in extraordinary circumstances.

This event is open to all staff, students, alumni and community members that support women. We look forward to your attendance and contribution to this great event.
