Bushcare Beginners - training 2021

About you

  • Ever joined a mailing list, liked a facebook page or walked past a bushcare site and wondered how to get involved?
  • Looking for new outdoor recreational activities?
  • Want to give something back to the local community?
  • Interested in native plants and wildlife and want to know more?
  • Want to do something about climate change?

Dates, time and what to bring

The training is one four hour session offered on two dates so please select one or the other not both:

  • Saturday 17 April 2021 9am - 1pm
  • Saturday 15 May 2021 9am - 1pm

Please arrive at 845am for a 9am start

The four hour workshop is followed by a BYO lunch and Q&A discussion from 1pm

The venue is outdoors and includes hands on bushcare work so in addition to your lunch please bring a hat and sunscreen and gardening gloves. Tools will be supplied on the day.

Bookings and course cost

While the cost if free bookings are essential as each session has a limited number of participants to ensure individual attention and the opportunity for hands on learning.

The training is intended for people who are interested though not already involved in bushcare.

Trainer

Damon Bassett has extensive bushcare knowledge and experience working with local volunteers as well as an understanding of the Cooks River and urban biodiversity through former environmental management roles at Inner West Council and Marrickville Council.

Facilitator introduction, acknowledgement of country, house-keeping

ACTIVITY: Participant introductions

Site safety

ACTIVITY: Run through a site safety and hazard assessment with the group on site

About bushcare methods

Restoration - Having a collective vision for a place to work towards, The 4 R’s – retain, regenerate, restore, reconstruct

Site values – aboriginal heritage, habitat, locally significant flora, rocks and geology, place in landscape

Barriers to restoration – neighbours, weeds, stormwater and erosion, dumping, connectivity to other natural areas, domestic and pest animals, soil type and disturbance, vandalism, size and shape of site

ACTIVITY: In pairs come up with two barriers to the Rosedale Reserve site that the group might have had to deal with or are continuing to deal with and report back

Types of weeds, their impacts and how to remove them

ACTIVITY: Group to undertake weeding of different species at Rosedale Reserve site using appropriate techniques. Facilitator to rotate around the group to help ID, demo, answer questions etc.

Restoration

Habitat and providing it while a site is establishing

When and what to plant

ACTIVITY: Group undertake weeding of different relevant species at the new site using appropriate techniques. Facilitator to rotate around the group to help ID, demo, answer questions etc. OR create some habitat features for fauna that might live there. (15-20mins)

Walk through and ID and discuss native plants on site - succession planning, regeneration
