About this event

Bush Products and the Law

Bush Products and the Law is a unique workshop specifically designed to provide entrepreneurs, businesses and community members with insight into holistic solutions for managing Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) in the commercialisation of bushfoods and bush products.

The workshop will provide you with insight on:

  • The Australian bush products industry;
  • Intellectual Property (IP)
  • Protecting Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP);
  • Commercialising bush products; and
  • Case Studies (who & what is successful)

Participants will also receive a workshop  summary paper and have an opportunity to ask question during a Q&A session.

Who is it for?

Anyone wanting a better understanding of how to respectfully approach the use of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) when entering or existing in the bush foods and products market. This may include researchers, business people, chefs, pharmacists, government representatives and anyone interested in the commercialisation of Bush Products.

Your workshop presenters will be Dr Terri Janke (Solicitor Director) and Anika Valenti (Senior Solicitor).

Dr Terri Janke, Wuthathi/Meriam woman, is the Solicitor Director of Terri Janke and Company. Terri is an international authority on Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) rights, and is known for innovating pathways for Indigenous creatives and businesses. She has written the leading ICIP Protocols for many sectors including the arts, museums, archives, film and business. Terri assists clients with legal matters in areas such as incorporation, joint ventures, procurement, governance, employment, intellectual property and engagement.

Anika Valenti is a Senior Solicitor at Terri Janke and Company. She helps clients manage their business and commercial issues by advising and presenting on a wide array of matters, including business incorporation and governance, Indigenous Procurement Policies, intellectual property (IP) and Indigenous Cultural & Intellectual Property (ICIP) protection & management, consumer law, privacy and confidentiality. Anika recently developed the legal contracting framework and cultural protocols for protection of community IP and ICIP for The Keeping Place GIS platform, as well as ICIP Protocols for AgriFutures Australia, the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and the University of Western Australia. Anika has travelled extensively around Australia providing business, joint venture, arts, bushfoods, tourism, IP and branding, and ICIP workshops and training to First Nations businesses and organisations.
