Buildings That Breathe
We are excited to announce the Buildings that Breathe CPD to be jointly delivered by Brisbane City Council, Australian Institute of Architects and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
This CPD session will feature speakers discussing the recently updated New World City Design Guide: Buildings that Breathe presented by Brisbane City Council's David Cowan (Senior Urban Planner, Urban Renewal Brisbane. The event will also include 'buildings that breathe' case studies delivered by a member of the Australian Institute of Architects and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, followed by a panel discussion with Q&A.
To compete in a competitive global market, Brisbane needs to take advantage of distinctive attributes and cultivate a unique identity. Embracing its desirable climate, Brisbane City Council has prepared a Design Guide for delivering Buildings that Breathe to provide a shared vision for achieving subtropical building design in Brisbane.
The design guide provides an inspirational design benchmark for architects, planners, developers, property professionals and the broader community.
Showcasing the highest standards of design and construction, these developments will contribute to Brisbane's identity by creating an enviable and lush urban environment that attracts investment and tourism, celebrates our lifestyle and stimulates economic activity.
Illustrating best-practice examples and easy-to-understand design elements, practitioners will be encouraged to use the guide, which also includes a checklist, to help them in the understanding and responding to the requirements of City Plan 2014.
Eight Key Design Elements:
The Buildings that Breathe Design Guide is intended to be a user-friendly, multi-dimensional tool underpinned by eight design elements that have been identified as key considerations to creating good subtropical architecture and ‘buildings that breathe’, namely:
1. Orientate yourself
2. Occupy outdoor spaces
3. Illuminate with daylight
4. Natural air and ventilation
5. Shade and protect
6. Living greenery
7. Identity matters
8. Reduce energy and waste
